About This Audiobook

In *Nature of War*, J.N. Chaney crafts a science fiction sequel that refuses to rest on the laurels of its predecessor. Set against the backdrop of a shaky intergalactic alliance, the story follows Captain Alyss Cortez as she navigates the treacherous politics of peace. Chaney’s worldbuilding is razor-sharp, blending military sci-fi with the emotional weight of characters rebuilding their lives after war. The prose crackles with tension, even in moments of relative calm, and the stakes feel personal—because they are. This isn’t just a story about surviving the future; it’s about what comes after the guns fall silent.

Khristine Hvam’s narration is the secret weapon here. Her voice shifts effortlessly between Alyss’s exhausted leadership, the dry wit of her crew, and the eerie calm of alien diplomats. Hvam doesn’t just read lines—she sells personalities, imbuing each character with a distinct cadence that makes the audiobook feel like a living, breathing crew. The pacing is brisk but never rushed, and the production quality ensures every explosion and whispered negotiation lands with clarity. Fans of military sci-fi and political intrigue will find plenty to chew on, but Chaney’s knack for emotional depth elevates this above the genre’s usual fare.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Nature of War* expecting a straightforward space opera sequel, but J.N. Chaney delivered something far more compelling—a story about the scars of war, not just the battles. Alyss Cortez is a protagonist who’s equal parts hardened soldier and reluctant diplomat, and her internal conflict over the new alliance feels achingly real. There’s a moment about two-thirds in where she has to choose between loyalty and pragmatism that made me pause the audiobook just to absorb it. That’s the hallmark of good sci-fi: it uses futuristic settings to explore timeless questions, and Chaney nails it. Khristine Hvam’s narration is the cherry on top. I’ve heard her bring characters to life before, but her performance here is next-level. The way she modulates Alyss’s voice between exhaustion and determination is masterful, and the side characters (especially the snarky engineer) have distinct, memorable deliveries. My only critiques are minor: a few worldbuilding dumps mid-dialogue that feel a bit clunky, and the ending wraps up a tad too neatly for my tastes. But these are nitpicks in an otherwise stellar listen. If you love military sci-fi with emotional depth and a narrator who elevates every line, this is a must-buy.
