I went into NDE with tempered expectations, having read Savile's work in the past, and was thoroughly blown away by the sheer audacity of this novel. Mathews' narration is nothing short of phenomenal, coaxing out the subtlest emotional tremors from even the most minor characters. The pacing is deliberate, mirroring the slow-burning introspection of the protagonist as he grapples with the aftermath of his near-death experience. One minor quibble I have is with the narrative's tendency to info-dump certain plot points, which can make for a slightly jarring listening experience. However, these moments are fleeting and in no way detract from the overall impact of the story. In fact, Savile's bold, unapologetic approach to the occult is one of the novel's greatest strengths – it's a testament to his skill that he's able to balance such outlandish ideas with a deep, abiding empathy for his characters. Overall, NDE is a must-listen for fans of psychological horror and the supernatural.
