Listening to Jerry Stahl narrate his own memoir is like watching a pyromaniac light a campfire—controlled chaos, beautiful flames, and the constant risk of getting burned. His voice, raspy and weary but sharp as a straight razor, carries the weight of decades of self-sabotage and wry observation. It’s a performance that feels uncomfortably intimate, like being trapped in a car with a friend who won’t stop talking about their latest meltdown while simultaneously making you laugh so hard your ribs hurt. Stahl’s narration thrives in the contradictions: he’s a man who mocks his own flaws even as he dissects them under a microscope. The pacing is erratic—just like his life—which works in the book’s favor, mimicking the disjointed way trauma lingers. That said, the shift from gallows humor to outright despair can feel abrupt, leaving the listener (and Stahl himself) gasping for air between jokes. The audiobook’s production is clean but minimalist, letting Stahl’s voice and words do the heavy lifting. If there’s a critique, it’s that the book occasionally dips into navel-gazing when it could afford to linger longer on the historical weight of the sites he visits. But then again, Stahl’s greatest sin has always been his inability to shut up—and that’s exactly why this audiobook is so gripping.
