About This Audiobook

New from Here isn't just a story about the early days of a global pandemic—it’s a grounded, emotionally sharp portrait of a Chinese American family navigating fear, xenophobia, and the quiet bravery it takes to stand tall when the world turns hostile. Centered on ten-year-old Knox, the youngest of three siblings, the narrative captures the disorientation of lockdown through a child’s eyes, where Zoom school and empty grocery shelves become the new normal. But what sets this audiobook apart is how it treats racism not as a subplot, but as a lived reality—subtle glances, hostile remarks, the weight of being seen as 'other' even in your own neighborhood. Kelly Yang, known for her unflinching honesty in children’s lit, doesn’t soften the truth, but she also fills the story with resilience, humor, and familial love that never feels forced. Justin Chien’s narration is a revelation. His vocal range gives each family member a distinct presence—Knox’s wide-eyed curiosity, his older sister’s teenage sarcasm, his mother’s tired but determined tone—all delivered with warmth and precision. The production is crisp, with subtle ambient cues that enhance but never overwhelm. This isn’t just an audiobook about a specific moment in history; it’s a guide for kids on how to speak up, show up, and hold on to hope when everything feels uncertain. Perfect for families listening together or middle graders ready for stories that reflect their world.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I came to New from Here expecting a timely pandemic story, but what I got was something deeper—a coming-of-age tale wrapped in the chaos of lockdown, prejudice, and parental pressure. Justin Chien’s narration instantly pulled me in. His Knox is authentically young: curious, impulsive, and often confused, but never infantilized. I especially loved how he handled the family’s group scenes—the overlapping voices felt real, like a household in motion. The story’s pacing hits a sweet spot: it doesn’t rush through emotional moments, but also doesn't linger too long, making it engaging for younger listeners. Yang does a strong job showing how racism operates in everyday spaces—school, supermarkets, online chats—without making the book feel like a lesson. That said, I did find the subplot about Knox’s older brother a bit underdeveloped, and a few transitions between home and school felt abrupt. Still, the audiobook’s emotional payoff, especially in the final chapters, landed with real weight. It’s rare to find a middle-grade story that treats kids as capable witnesses to history—this one does, and then some.
