Listening to Eyes That Speak to the Stars feels like being let in on a family secret—one of quiet pride and deep connection. Justin Chien’s narration is masterfully understated. He doesn’t perform so much as embody the narrative, delivering each line with a tenderness that makes the story feel both personal and universal. I especially appreciated how he navigates the rhythmic cadence of Joanna Ho’s prose; the pauses between lines give space for reflection, which is rare in children’s audiobooks that often rush to the next moment. The soft, ambient background score is used sparingly but effectively, swelling just enough during the references to ancestors to create a sense of reverence. That said, the brevity that makes this audiobook so potent could also be a limitation. At five minutes, it’s over before you’re fully settled, and younger children might need it replayed multiple times to absorb the layered meaning. I also wish there had been slight vocal differentiation when shifting between the boy’s perspective and his grandfather’s wisdom—it sometimes blurred the emotional handoff. Still, these are minor quibbles. This isn’t just an audiobook about seeing yourself—it’s about learning to see with intention, and Chien’s delivery ensures that message lands with grace.
