About This Audiobook

Imagine a near-future Earth where humanity chokes on its own waste, society has fractured into scavenger clans, and beauty is a commodity reserved for the elite. *Nexhuman* drops you into this grimy, neon-soaked dystopia with Peter Payne, a junk-sorting outcast who finds his life upended when he discovers Alba—a radiant, almost alien nexhuman hiding in the junkyards. This isn't your typical cyberpunk romance; Verso's worldbuilding is tactile, suffocating in the best way, with every rusted pipe and discarded circuit board feeling like a character. The prose crackles with grit and invention, blending hard sci-fi rigor with a visceral emotional core. Greg Douras’ narration is the glue holding it all together—his voice shifts seamlessly from weary cynicism to tender wonder, selling the raw humanity (and inhumanity) of this world. If you crave sci-fi that’s as thought-provoking as it is immersive, this is your ticket.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I approached *Nexhuman* expecting another dystopian slog, but Francesco Verso’s novel surprised me with its heart and ingenuity. Greg Douras’ narration is a standout—his portrayal of Peter’s weary resilience and Alba’s eerie, almost robotic precision is masterful, especially in the quieter moments. The world feels lived-in, from the claustrophobic junkyards to the opulent enclaves of the elite, all rendered with a tactile, almost tactile clarity. That said, some of the nexhuman lore bogs down the pacing; Alba’s internal monologues occasionally stall the momentum with exposition dumps. The love story at its core is uneven—Peter’s infatuation with Alba risks veering into creepy territory, though Verso walks the line deftly enough to make it palatable. Production-wise, the audiobook’s sound design is minimal but effective, letting Douras’ performance shine without gimmicky distractions. If you’re here for hard sci-fi with emotional teeth, *Nexhuman* delivers—but brace for a few rough patches.
