Her Kentucky accent feels lived-in, not performative, and her delivery of the novel’s pivotal card game scene is chilling in its offhand brutality. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The nonlinear timeline, while thematically rich, can feel disjointed in audio form—especially in the first hour, where the jumps between eras lack clear signposting. A few secondary characters (particularly the adult men) blur together in Patterson’s narration, their voices insufficiently distinct to carry the weight of their roles. And while the ending is devastating, it arrives with a abruptness that might leave some listeners wanting more resolution. Still, these are quibbles.
