I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I first heard the Virtual Voice narrator’s performance. A synthetic voice lends itself to either robotic detachment or uncanny valley creepiness, but here, it’s neither. Instead, the digital tone becomes an unexpected asset, giving the romance a dreamlike quality that mirrors the disorientation of falling for someone while adrift in a foreign city. The narrator’s pacing is impeccable—emotions rise and fall like the Spanish sun, and the pauses between dialogue feel deliberate, like silent moments shared over shared plates of patatas bravas. That said, the narration occasionally stumbles when delivering rapid-fire Spanish slang, which risks losing listeners unfamiliar with phrases like “qué fuerte” or “no pasa nada.” On the story itself, Santiago excels at balancing warmth and melancholy. The protagonists, Lina and Dani, are flawed in the best way—Lina’s reluctance to trust after her ex’s betrayal and Dani’s avoidance of family pressure make their chemistry feel earned, not forced. My biggest critique? The third act leans heavily into contrived coincidences (seriously, how many times can two people from different continents bump into each other in Lisbon?), which slightly undercuts the otherwise authentic emotional beats. Still, by the final chapter, even the most jaded listener will be reaching for tissues. The Virtual Voice’s narration transforms this from a solid YA romance into a uniquely immersive experience—like eavesdropping on a love story whispered by the wind.
