About This Audiobook

John Green’s *Nos étoiles contraires* isn’t just a book about dying—it’s a book about living, and it does so with a razor-sharp wit that cuts through the sentimentality. Hazel and Augustus are the kind of characters who feel like they’ve always existed in your life, but not the sanitized, Instagram-filtered version. Their banter is electric, their pain is raw, and their love story unfolds in a way that’s as messy as it is beautiful. The audiobook’s power lies in its refusal to romanticize mortality; instead, it leans into the absurdity of it, making the tears feel earned rather than forced. Jessica Monceau’s narration is a masterclass in balance—her voice drips with affection for the characters even as she delivers their darkest moments with unflinching clarity. The pacing is relentless, mirroring the urgency of life’s unpredictability, and the production enhances the emotional gut-punches without overdoing it. If you’ve ever laughed until your stomach hurt and then sobbed into your pillow the same night, this audiobook will haunt you in the best way.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into this audiobook expecting a tearjerker, but what I got was a story that made me feel like I’d aged ten years in seven hours. Jessica Monceau doesn’t just read the words—she inhabits them. Her portrayal of Hazel, with her dry humor and quiet resilience, is nothing short of revelatory. There’s a scene where Augustus confronts his diagnosis with a grin and a shrug that still echoes in my head, Monceau’s delivery turning what could’ve been melodrama into something deeply human. That said, the pacing occasionally stumbles in the middle act; some of the philosophical tangents drag, and I found myself zoning out during Hazel’s monologues about an imperial affliction. The production is solid, but the audio levels dip a hair too low during whispered lines, which is distracting in quiet moments. Still, the payoff is worth it. The final act wrecks you, not with sentimentality, but with the brutal honesty of two people who know their time is limited refusing to waste a second. If you’re looking for a love story that doesn’t flinch from the ugliness of life, this is it. Just keep tissues handy.
