I started *Notes on a Silencing* expecting another #MeToo redemption arc, but Crawford delivers something far grittier and more unsettling. Her narration is a masterclass in restraint—she doesn’t dramatize, doesn’t sensationalize. The quiet devastation in her voice when she recounts the school’s response to her assault is more chilling than any scream. The pacing is deliberate, almost clinical, which makes the rare moments of raw emotion hit harder. That said, the audiobook’s 11-hour runtime occasionally drags during its middle passages, where legal jargon and bureaucratic wrangling slow the narrative. Crawford’s occasional digressions into her adult life (flash-forwards to her career in publishing) feel tonally jarring, like a misplaced epilogue in the middle of the story. The production is unobtrusive—no overdone sound effects or dramatic pauses—just Crawford’s voice, steady and unflinching, as she dissects the cost of survival. This isn’t a book that leaves you with catharsis; it leaves you with fury, and that’s exactly the point. If you want a memoir that doesn’t coddle you with false hope, this is it.
