Oaths and Outfits: A Superhero Slice-of-Life LitRPG

Hollie Jackson should get a lifetime achievement award for narrating this audiobook. I’ve heard great narrators before, but Jackson elevates *Oaths and Outfits* into something transcendent. Her Anika is equal parts exhausted and endearing, her alien producer sounds like a cross between a used-car salesman and a lovable lunatic, and the rival heroes? Pure campy villainy delivered with a wink. The production quality is crisp, with subtle sound effects that punctuate fights or training sequences without overpowering the story. That said, I’ll admit I got lost in the early world-building—there are so many factions, upgrades, and acronyms that I had to rewind a few times to keep track. And while the humor often lands, a few of the later corporate satire jokes feel a bit on-the-nose, like the script is trying too hard to be *The Onion*. But those are minor quibbles. The heart of this story is Anika’s journey from understudy to, well, whatever she becomes—because the beauty of *Oaths and Outfits* is that heroism isn’t the point. It’s about the grind, the politics, and the sheer absurdity of trying to be great when the system is rigged. If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at a superhero trope or rooted for the underdog in a competition reality show, this audiobook will scratch that itch. Jackson’s performance makes it impossible not to care, even when the story meanders (and it does, delightfully).
