About This Audiobook

Miller Dawson’s life is all about the game—the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, the thrill of the steal—but lately, his instincts feel off. After his best friend’s sudden death, the outfield he once owned feels like a place he no longer belongs. Off Base isn’t just another sports romance; it’s a story about athletes who are as flawed off the field as they are flawless on it. Haley Warren crafts a romance that digs into grief, identity, and the pressure to keep swinging even when life knocks you flat. The audiobook balances the raw ache of personal loss with the crackling tension of two people who might just be each other’s out.

Narrated by Alex Kydd and Kasi Hollowell, the performance brings a lived-in authenticity to the audiobook. Kydd’s voice has a rough-edged warmth, perfect for Miller’s guarded charm and simmering frustration, while Hollowell’s delivery crackles with Ren’s dry wit and quiet resilience. Their chemistry elevates what could’ve been a familiar meet-cute into something more substantial, especially in the quieter, emotionally charged scenes where the dialogue hums with unspoken tension. The production doesn’t shy away from the messiness of the story—baseball chatter, city sounds, and the occasional sigh over the line readings all ground the listening experience in something real.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

I went into Off Base expecting a light sports romance with a meet-cute on the field and a quick resolution. What I got was a messy, emotionally honest story about two people who are terrible at letting themselves heal. Miller’s grief manifests as a refusal to slow down, even when his body and his teammates are telling him he’s past his prime. Ren’s bitterness over her career-ending injury isn’t just a plot device—it’s a full-blown character study in how identity gets tangled up in what you do. The romance isn’t a cure-all; it’s a slow, sometimes bumpy dance where both characters have to decide if they’re worth loving, on and off the field. Alex Kydd’s narration sells Miller’s gruff vulnerability better than I expected, though I wished his vocal range for Ren’s scenes had been a touch more distinct from his own timbre—occasionally, I had to backtrack to confirm who was speaking. Kasi Hollowell, however, is a revelation. Her delivery of Ren’s sarcasm lands with perfect timing, and her softer moments carry a weight that lingers. The pacing is brisk but never rushed, with the baseball scenes feeling cinematic without overshadowing the emotional beats. My only real critique? The ending wraps things up a little too neatly for my taste, but Warren’s voice is so compelling that I still found myself caring what happened next. If you want a sports romance that punches above its weight in emotional stakes, this hits the mark.
