About This Audiobook

*Old Dark* isn’t your typical dragon fantasy—it’s a brutal, unflinching power struggle where the villain has already won. For two centuries, the dragon lord Old Dark has crushed humanity under his talons, turning cities into vassals and palaces into abattoirs. There’s no chosen-one prophecy here, just the desperate scraps of resistance clinging to survival. Michael La Ronn skips the slow worldbuilding; instead, he drops you into a world where fear is currency and every alliance is a gamble.

Miles Meili’s narration leans into the story’s razor-edged tone with a voice that’s equal parts gravel and venom. His delivery for Old Dark is particularly striking—less a monstrous roar, more a cold, calculating purr that makes the dragon’s cruelty feel intimate. The audiobook’s pacing mirrors its protagonist’s urgency: no meandering subplots, just a tight, relentless march toward confrontation. If you’re tired of fantasy that romanticizes dragons, this is the antidote—dark, efficient, and unapologetically vicious.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll be honest: *Old Dark* frustrated me at first. The opening chapters throw you into the deep end with minimal hand-holding—no glossary of dragon politics, no gentle introduction to the world’s rules. But that’s the point. La Ronn trusts you to piece together the hierarchy of fear, and once you do, the payoff is visceral. The story follows a motley crew of outcasts—thieves, ex-soldiers, and a disgraced scholar—who aren’t heroes so much as they’re the last people stupid enough to fight back. Their plans are messy, their victories pyrrhic, and their morale is always one bad decision away from collapse. It’s refreshing in a genre that often sandpapers off the rough edges of rebellion. Miles Meili’s performance is the audiobook’s secret weapon. He doesn’t do a dozen distinct voices, but his tonal shifts—especially for Old Dark’s silky, menacing dialogue—sell the dragon’s dominance without resorting to cartoonish growls. The production is clean, though I docked half a star for a few odd pacing choices; some action sequences blur together in a rush, while introspective moments drag just a beat too long. And while the ending lands with a punch, the final act’s reliance on a late-stage twist feels slightly uneven compared to the grounded tension of the earlier chapters. Still, if you crave fantasy that’s more *Mad Max* than *Lord of the Rings*—where hope is a liability and dragons are the ultimate oligarchs—this is your kind of fire.
