His narration is a masterclass in contrast: Oliver’s voice is thin and reedy, like a boy who’s never had enough to eat, while Fagin’s lines drip with oily charm, the kind of performance that makes you lean in even as your skin crawls. The real revelation, though, is how Görtz handles the novel’s darker turns. Nancy’s death scene isn’t just tragic; it’s *physically* unsettling, his voice dropping to a whisper that forces you to strain to hear her last words. That’s the kind of immersive storytelling that turns a classic into an experience. That said, this isn’t a flawless production. The pacing in the first act drags slightly—Dickens’ digressions about workhouse politics feel indulgent even with Görtz’s best efforts—and the abrupt shifts between comedic and horrific tones can be jarring. (The Artful Dodger’s cockney patter clashing with a child’s murder? It’s *supposed* to unsettle you, but the whiplash is real.)
