Görtz’s performance made it impossible to ignore. His delivery isn’t polished or performative; it’s intimate, like eavesdropping on Aurelius scribbling by candlelight. The pacing brilliantly mirrors the emperor’s mental meanderings—slow, halting moments of clarity punctuated by sudden, biting wit. That said, the production isn’t flawless: some chapters drag, and Aurelius’s repetition (inevitable in a private journal) can feel stifling without Görtz’s tonal shifts to keep it alive. Still, the audiobook’s power lies in its rawness—the way it forces you to confront not just philosophy, but the lived experience of a man drowning in the weight of his own expectations. Highly recommended, but don’t expect a comfortable listen.
