Beth Eyre’s narration is the secret sauce that makes this audiobook sing—or, more accurately, sneer. She nails the brittleness of a community holding its breath, her voice cracking just enough to sell the tension when a character’s facade slips. The accents are subtly handled (no over-the-top Cockney caricatures here), and her pacing keeps the story from dragging despite its leisurely burn. The real star, though, is Richell’s ability to make a village feel like a pressure cooker; every street corner hums with whispered half-truths, and the dialogue crackles with the kind of passive aggression that makes you clench your jaw. That said, the middle act sags a bit under the weight of its own foreshadowing—some revelations land with a thud rather than a crash, and a few side characters blur together in the fog of backstory.
