Listening to 'Paladin' is like being dropped into a war zone and having to figure out how to survive. O'Connell's writing is lean and muscular, with a keen eye for detail that brings the grimy, desperate reality of the invasion to life. Cuevas' narration is a perfect match for this grimy, visceral story, his voice capturing the weariness and resolve of the characters as they face impossible odds. The pacing is relentless, with each chapter feeling like a sprint towards the next crisis. My only critique is that some of the alien biology and technology feels a bit hand-wavy, but this is a minor quibble in an otherwise gripping listen. The production is top-notch, with subtle sound effects and music that enhance the atmosphere without being intrusive.
