Paragon of Solitude

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when the publisher pitched *Paragon of Solitude* as a “prophecy meets magic awakening” story—I’ve heard that before. But Kohanek flips the script by refusing to rush. The first half of this audiobook is a masterclass in restraint, letting the protagonist’s confusion and isolation feel almost oppressive. Proczko’s performance is instrumental here; he doesn’t just read the words—he *inhabits* them. I lost count of how many times I paused to relisten to his delivery of a single line, the way his voice would drop to a whisper during moments of vulnerability or crack with restrained fury during bursts of raw power. That said, the pacing isn’t flawless. The middle act drags at points, and some of the lore dumps feel tacked on, as if the worldbuilding couldn’t wait for the emotional weight to catch up. The production is crisp and immersive, though, with subtle ambient sounds that never distract from the narration. My biggest critique? The ending—while thematically satisfying—feels abrupt, as if the story ran out of runway. Still, by the final chapter, I was so invested in the protagonist’s journey that I didn’t care. This isn’t just another fantasy audiobook; it’s a haunting, introspective ride that lingers long after the last word fades.
