About This Audiobook

Patrimonio is Philip Roth's unflinching, deeply personal exploration of his father's relentless vitality and the city of Newark that shaped them both. Roth's prose is as vivid as a memory, painting stark, unforgettable images of his father's indomitable spirit. Stefano Fresi's narration is a standout feature, his rich, resonant voice capturing the essence of Roth's words, while his skillful pacing and emphasis bring out the humor and pathos in equal measure. This audiobook is a unique blend of biography, memoir, and love letter to a city, making it a compelling listen for fans of Roth's work and anyone interested in the complex, often challenging relationship between fathers and sons.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

Listening to Patrimonio felt like eavesdropping on a deeply personal conversation. Roth's writing is so intimate, so unapologetic, that it's almost uncomfortable at times. But that's what makes it so compelling. Fresi's narration is exceptional, his ability to switch between Roth's voice and his father's seamless. He captures the dry wit and sharp observations that make Roth's writing so distinctive. The pacing is excellent, too, building to a powerful climax that had me reaching for the tissues. My only critique is that Roth's digressions can sometimes feel a bit self-indulgent, but they're so fascinating that it's easy to forgive. Overall, this is a remarkable audiobook that offers a unique perspective on family, memory, and the passage of time.
