About This Audiobook

*Payback* isn’t just another revenge thriller—it’s a gut-punch of a novel where the protagonist’s rage feels like a living thing, coiled tight and ready to strike. David Nees strips Dan Stone down to his raw, bleeding core: a man who’s lost everything except the cold, methodical fury that keeps him breathing. What sets this apart from the usual crime-thriller fare is the unflinching psychological toll of vengeance; Stone isn’t a hero, or even an antihero—he’s a ghost haunting his own life, and the audiobook’s narration by Kevin Scollin amplifies that eerie detachment with a voice that’s equal parts gravel and ice.

The audiobook’s production leans into its strengths: Scollin’s delivery is measured, almost clinical, which makes the rare bursts of violence hit harder. There’s no melodrama here, just the quiet, relentless tension of a man who’s already dead inside, moving through a world that’s failed him. The pacing mirrors Stone’s own unraveling—slow burns punctuated by sudden, brutal eruptions. If you’re tired of thrillers that romanticize revenge, *Payback* offers something far darker: a story where the cost of vengeance isn’t just blood, but the last shreds of a man’s humanity.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll be honest: *Payback* isn’t for listeners who want a tidy, cathartic revenge fantasy. Dan Stone’s quest isn’t about justice—it’s about annihilation, and Kevin Scollin’s narration sells that chilling reality. His performance is deliberately restrained, almost monotonous at times, which somehow makes the violence more unsettling when it arrives. There’s a scene midway through where Stone confronts a low-level mobster in a diner, and Scollin’s delivery is so flat, so devoid of inflection, that it sent a shiver down my spine. This isn’t a performance that relies on theatrics; it’s the audio equivalent of a scalpel, precise and unflinching. That said, the book isn’t without its stumbles. The middle act drags slightly as Stone methodically dismantles his enemies’ operations—Nees lingers a little too long on the logistics of revenge, and a few secondary characters feel underdeveloped, serving as little more than targets on a hit list. The female characters, in particular, are thinly sketched, which feels like a missed opportunity in an otherwise psychologically rich story. Still, the final act delivers a punch that justifies the buildup, and the audiobook’s production (crisp, with no distracting background noise) ensures nothing pulls you out of Stone’s grim headspace. If you like your thrillers morally bleak and narratively lean, this one will stick with you—like a bruise you can’t stop pressing.
