But Bianca Amato’s narration sold me within the first twenty minutes. Her Claire is a walking contradiction: equal parts weary travel agent and accidental detective, and Amato nails the mix of sarcasm and sincerity. The Yorkshire backdrop is practically a character itself, with Dakin’s descriptions so vivid I could smell the damp wool of the tour bus seats and taste the over-steeped tea at their stops. The story isn’t without hiccups. The first act drags a bit as Dakin sets up the tour’s premise, and one of the Tucson visitors is basically a cartoon of American naïveté. But once the bodies start piling up (metaphorically, then literally), the pacing tightens into something genuinely gripping. The mystery itself is clever enough to reward attention, though it leans heavily on a few clichés—like the *obvious* red herring. Still, Amato’s performance keeps the whole thing buoyant. The audiobook’s 9+ hours fly by because her energy is infectious, whether she’s delivering a scathing put-down or a gasp-worthy cliffhanger.
