López’s performance sells this perfectly. His voice has the raspy weariness of a man who’s spent too many nights in smoky train cars, but he never lets the energy flag. When Campbell snaps at a mechanic or barks orders, López’s delivery is so sharp you can almost see the spittle. That said, this isn’t a flawless gem. The ending feels abrupt even by Hemingway’s standards—less like a punchline and more like the story simply *stops*. And while the cycling jargon (six-day races, pacemakers) adds authenticity, it might leave casual listeners scratching their heads. Still, the audiobook’s brevity is its strength. There’s no fat, no filler, just a single, breathless idea executed with precision. It’s the literary equivalent of a shot of espresso: bitter, bracing, and over before you’re ready. Perfect for a commute or a quick hit of Hemingway’s lesser-known grit.
