I went into PETRIFIED expecting a quick genre fix, but what I got was something more subdued and strangely affecting. The story centers on a child’s encounter with the unseen—literally and emotionally—and while the plot is sparse, it’s layered with implication. The writing is lean, almost fragile, which suits the runtime, but I did wish for a bit more psychological depth. Still, James has a way of making silence feel loud. The real wildcard here is the Virtual Voice narration. It’s robotic—obviously—and that could’ve been a disaster. But in a story about emotional detachment and things felt but not seen, the artificial tone started making sense. It’s not warm or dynamic, but it creates an unnerving consistency that human narration might’ve softened too much. Pacing is deliberate, almost too much so. There’s a stretch in the middle where ambient sounds carry the scene, and while it builds atmosphere, it risks losing listeners looking for momentum. One critique: the ending lands with quiet power but feels slightly under-earned—like a single beat was skipped in the emotional arc. Production values are high, though. The subtle audio effects—whispers just below intelligibility, the faint distortion on certain words—elevate the whole experience. If you’re deep into THE UNSEEN world and want a moment of stillness amid the chaos, this is worth the less-than-an-hour commitment.
