About This Audiobook

Pineapple Hurricane drops listeners into a coastal Florida town where the weather isn’t the only danger brewing. As Hurricane Esme churns toward land, Charlotte—not your typical sleuth, but sharp, resourceful, and deeply rooted in her community—begins to suspect that two deaths written off as storm-related mishaps are anything but accidental. The connection? Both victims were stockpiling critical supplies—ice, fuel, batteries—valuable currency when the grid goes down. What starts as a hunch becomes a race against time as Charlotte digs into the town’s underbelly, where desperation, greed, and long-held grudges threaten to erupt faster than the storm surge. Amy Vansant crafts a taut, atmospheric thriller that uses the chaos of an impending hurricane not just as backdrop, but as an active, breathing force manipulating human behavior. Rosemary Benson’s narration elevates the tension with a grounded, nuanced performance that captures both the humid anxiety of Pineapple Port and Charlotte’s quiet determination. Her pacing mirrors the storm’s slow creep—methodical, then sudden—making the audiobook feel less like a listen and more like an experience. Unlike many amateur sleuth tales, Pineapple Hurricane avoids cozy clichés; there’s no quaint bookstore or cup of tea here—just storm shutters, generator fumes, and moral gray zones. This is a mystery that leans into urgency, where every decision has life-or-death stakes, and the real disaster might not come from the sky.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went in expecting a lightweight coastal mystery but got sucker-punched—in the best way—by how tense and immersive Pineapple Hurricane actually is. Rosemary Benson’s voice is calm but loaded with quiet intensity, perfectly matching Charlotte’s steady resolve. She doesn’t overact or resort to character accents that distract; instead, she lets the story’s mounting dread do the work. The hurricane setting isn’t just a gimmick—it’s brilliantly used to heighten isolation and raise moral stakes. I loved how the hoarding of supplies becomes a central theme, exposing class tensions and survival instincts in a way most thrillers gloss over. The pacing is excellent, with slow-burn reveals that snap into place just as the storm hits. That said, the middle drags slightly when Charlotte interviews multiple side characters in quick succession—some trimming there would’ve helped. Also, while I appreciate that Charlotte isn’t a cop or PI, her access to certain evidence stretches believability a bit. Still, these are minor flaws in an otherwise gripping, original take on the amateur sleuth genre. This audiobook made me unplug my own generator—just in case.
