It’s the audiobook equivalent of leaning in too close to a campfire. The structure, though, is where things get tricky. Campbell jumps between cultures with the enthusiasm of a kid showing off his bug collection, which can feel disjointed. One minute you’re in the Siberian tundra with shamanic reindeer cults; the next, you’re parsing the psychological function of incest taboos in Polynesia. Morey helps by shifting his tone—dryly analytical for the psychology, almost reverent for the sacred texts—but the whiplash is real. And while Campbell’s insights on how myths justify power (kings as god-incarnate, wars as cosmic battles) are brilliant, his 1950s-era Freud-adjacent takes on gender haven’t aged gracefully. Still, the audiobook’s production is flawless: no distracting edits, no volume spikes, just Morey’s voice and Campbell’s relentless intellect. If you can handle the occasional academic thicket, this isn’t just *about* myths—it’s an experience of their hypnotic, dangerous power.
