His impression of Pryor’s voice is so spot-on that I found myself checking the credits to confirm I wasn’t listening to an archival recording masquerading as a memoir. The pacing is relentless, mirroring Pryor’s own life—just when you think you’ve caught your breath after a wild anecdote about his early days hustling in clubs, the next story barrels in, darker or funnier than the last. Jackson handles the emotional gut-punches with surprising tenderness, especially in Pryor’s reflections on his diagnosis and the physical toll of his lifestyle. That said, the sheer volume of explicit language might be jarring for some listeners, and the production occasionally cuts off mid-sentence during Jackson’s vocal shifts, which feels like a missed opportunity for a tighter edit. Still, the flaws are minor in the face of the sheer *presence* Jackson brings to the material. It’s the kind of audiobook that leaves you exhilarated, exhausted, and hungry for more Pryor—even if, as he’d say, he’s already given you the ‘shit’ and you should be thanking him.
