Madeleine Dauer’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon, turning what could’ve been a melodramatic mess into a captivating listening experience. She nails the protagonist’s brittle wit and escalating panic, her voice shifting seamlessly from sarcastic to shattered in a heartbeat. The chemistry between her and the male narrator (here uncredited but perfectly cast) crackles—when they’re on the plane, their back-and-forth feels like eavesdropping on a real conversation, messy and electric. That said, the audiobook stumbles slightly in the second act, where the story veers into melodrama. The shift from grounded realism to soap-opera stakes feels abrupt, and Dauer’s performance, while excellent, can’t fully sell the sudden emotional whiplash. The production is clean, with no distracting audio quirks, though the sound design leans heavily on silence to emphasize dramatic pauses—effective, but occasionally overdone.
