The heroine’s financial desperation isn’t romanticized (there’s a scene where she calculates the cost of a tampon that *hurts*), and Ryan’s generosity isn’t altruistic—it’s a control tactic, and the audiobook forces you to sit with that discomfort. The narration is where this audiobook *shines*. Dauer’s voice work is phenomenal—she nails the heroine’s sarcasm, but it’s the moments when her voice cracks (like when she’s humiliated in a pawn shop) that make you *feel* her exhaustion. Kydd’s Ryan is a masterclass in restraint; he never oversells the charm, which makes his rare moments of vulnerability land like a gut punch. My only critique? The pacing drags slightly in the middle when the plot relies too heavily on miscommunication (a pet peeve of mine), and the sound mixing occasionally drowns out Dauer’s quieter lines in street scenes.
