Wicked Gods

I went into *Wicked Gods* expecting a light, steamy paranormal romance, but Michelle Hercules served me something far more satisfying: a story where desire and danger are indistinguishable. Lena, our Norm protagonist, isn’t some wide-eyed ingénue—she’s sharp, stubborn, and refreshingly skeptical of the Idols’ godly charms. Her chemistry with the Idols, particularly the enigmatic and infuriatingly arrogant ones, crackles with tension that feels earned, not manufactured. The world-building is the real star here; Hercules doesn’t just tell us the Idols are powerful—she shows us through small, insidious details, like how Lena’s hands shake when she uses forbidden magic or how the air itself hums with their presence. The romance unfolds at a breakneck pace, but it never feels rushed, thanks to Lena’s internal monologue, which is equal parts cynical and yearning. That said, the Idols’ perspectives are where things stumble slightly. A few felt more like caricatures—all brooding dominance and tragic backstories—than fully realized characters, and I wished Hercules had given them more nuance. The narration, however, salvages this with Kydd’s velvety voice making even the most clichéd lines feel compelling. Dauer’s performance as Lena is a masterclass in balancing sarcasm and vulnerability, though I did wish she’d dialed back the whispering in some pivotal scenes—it occasionally drowned out the emotional weight. Still, the production is top-tier, with sound design that makes the divine presence feel palpable. *Wicked Gods* isn’t perfect, but it’s a wild, intoxicating ride for anyone who loves their romance with a side of divine dysfunction.
