About This Audiobook

Morgan Rice’s *Realm of Dragons* isn’t just another fantasy—it’s a propulsive, emotionally rich coming-of-age story wrapped in a world where nobility sneers at those born without silver spoons. At its core is a protagonist who refuses to accept fate: a 16-year-old blacksmith’s son, poor and untrained, who dares to dream of wielding a sword instead of a hammer. Rice’s world-building crackles with stakes—imagine a medieval cosmos where dragons loom over politics like nuclear threats, their presence both terror and opportunity. The pacing is relentless, balancing intimate character moments with sprawling conflicts, and every scene feels earned, not padded. This isn’t a tale of chosen ones; it’s about the grit it takes to carve your own legend when the system’s rigged against you. Kevin Green’s narration is the secret weapon here, grounding the epic scale in a voice that’s equal parts gravelly and tender. His performance crackles with raw energy, especially in the protagonist’s fiercest moments, though his delivery occasionally stumbles over the more poetic passages, making the prose feel uneven at times. Still, the audiobook’s strength lies in how it marries high-stakes fantasy with the unvarnished grind of survival, making it feel urgent and alive.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I approached *Realm of Dragons* expecting yet another derivative YA fantasy, and left pleasantly shocked. Rice’s world isn’t just *inspired* by medieval Europe—it’s a crucible of class brutality where dragons aren’t just creatures but economic weapons, hoarded by the elite like plutonium. The protagonist’s arc is what elevates this beyond trope: his rage at being denied a voice feels personal, not performative. That’s where Green’s narration shines—his raspy, everyman tone sells the boy’s frustration before he’s even said a word. The production quality is solid, with subtle sound design that enhances immersion without overpowering the story. That said, my biggest gripe is the romance subplot, which arrives out of nowhere and feels like fan service shoehorned in. The pacing also stumbles in the final act, where battles blur together in a wash of adrenaline without enough emotional payoff. Still, the audiobook’s energy and Green’s commitment make it a standout in a crowded genre. If you want fantasy with bite—where the dragons aren’t just scenery but symbols of systemic oppression—this delivers.
