Rebels and Tyrants: Tales of the Fifth Age

His voice has this wonderful roughness, like a veteran storyteller who’s seen too much, and it *works*—especially in Perrin’s minotaur story, where the emotional beats land harder because Marriott doesn’t overplay them. That said, the audiobook isn’t perfect. A couple of tales (I’m looking at you, ‘The Land of the Blind’) drag with overly expositional dialogue, and Marriott’s female voices occasionally veer into caricature. Still, the highs outweigh the lows. The real strength here is the anthology’s thematic cohesion. Weis didn’t just slap together random Krynn stories; she chose pieces that interrogate power—whether it’s a tyrant’s paranoia, a rebel’s hypocrisy, or a monster’s quiet dignity. The pacing varies wildly, which might frustrate some listeners, but I appreciated the rhythm: a short, punchy fable followed by a slower, more introspective piece. The production quality is top-notch, with no distracting edits or volume inconsistencies. My only real gripe? At nearly 13 hours, it tests the limits of anthology endurance. But if you’re a Dragonlance fan who wants to see Krynn’s underbelly—or just love fantasy that’s more *Game of Thrones* than *Lord of the Rings*—this is worth your time.
