Michael Care isn’t some genius tactician or hidden prodigy—he’s a *mediocre* swordsman in a world where mediocrity gets you killed, and Kerr forces you to sit with that discomfort. The early loops are a masterclass in anti-satisfaction, where Care’s incremental improvements feel like watching paint dry while the apocalypse looms. But that’s the point. This isn’t a story about sudden epiphanies or deus ex machina; it’s about the grind, the *work* of becoming something better when the universe keeps hitting reset. By the time Care’s strategies start paying off, the payoff lands like a gut punch because you’ve *earned* it alongside him. Adam Stubbs’ performance is a huge part of why this works. He nails Care’s exhaustion—the way his voice drags on the third or fourth iteration of a failed battle, or how his sarcasm sharpens when he’s *this close* to a breakthrough. The supporting cast gets distinct but never cartoonish treatment, though I’ll dock half a point for a few female voices that veer into samey territory. Pacing is where opinions might split: the middle act drags like a march through mud (intentionally, but still), and Kerr’s web-novel roots show in some repetitive internal monologues. Yet the final third delivers a climax so brutally *earned* that I immediately queued up Book 2. If you love military fantasy with teeth, time-loop stories that respect the loop’s toll, or protagonists who feel real because they *fail* more than they succeed, this is your next obsession. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you about the body count—both on the page and in your patience.
