Brown’s writing in the early chapters is almost *too* efficient, hurling you through Darrow’s transformation from miner to infiltrator with barely a breath. That breakneck pace is both a strength and a weakness: the Institute’s survival-game middle act is where the audiobook *sing*s, thanks to Reynolds’ ability to make even minor characters feel distinct (his Howler accent is *chef’s kiss*), but the emotional beats sometimes get lost in the chaos. I wanted more time to marinate in Darrow’s guilt, not just his fury. Where this audiobook *excels* is in its unapologetic brutality—both narrative and auditory. Reynolds doesn’t flinch from the gore, and the sound design (subtle but effective) heightens the stakes: the *clang* of swords in the Passage, the echo of boots in the Obsidian warrens. My only real critique? The female characters, while compelling, often feel sidelined in service of Darrow’s arc. Mustapha’s strategic brilliance deserves more airtime, and the romance subplot with Mustang (as electric as Reynolds makes it) occasionally veers into distracting territory.
