About This Audiobook

Alan Gratz’s *Refugee* isn’t just a story—it’s a gut-punch of empathy wrapped in relentless tension. This isn’t one child’s journey, but three intertwined over decades, each fighting for the same impossible dream: safety. Josef lands in 1930s Germany as Nazi violence escalates; Isabel flees 1990s Cuba on a rickety raft; Mahmoud escapes 2015 Syria through war-torn streets—all desperate for refuge, all uncertain if freedom exists beyond the next wave. Gratz strips away the politics, leaving raw human desperation. The prose is sharp enough for middle-grade listeners but brutal enough to haunt adults, proving history’s most vulnerable aren’t just numbers. The audiobook doubles the impact with Michael Goldstrom, Kyla Garcia, and Assaf Cohen narrating each child’s arc. Their distinct, accented deliveries immerse you completely—Goldstrom’s Josef crackles with youthful defiance, Garcia’s Isabel simmers with quiet fury, and Cohen’s Mahmoud vibrates with exhausted determination. It’s a triptych of voices that refuses to let you look away.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ve edited a lot of historical YA, but *Refugee* stuck with me like a burr. The biggest surprise? It’s not preachy. Gratz trusts the reader (and listener) to sit in the discomfort of displacement without hammering a moral. The pacing is masterful—each chapter is a sprint, the stakes rising like tides. My only quibble is Mahmoud’s storyline sometimes feels crammed; 2015 Syria deserves more breathing room than the other arcs. Still, the gut-churning moment when his family’s van gets pelted with rocks left me audibly gasping. The narration elevates everything. Goldstrom’s Josef is a revelation—his German-accented English makes the Nazi threats feel visceral, while Garcia’s Cuban lilt gives Isabel’s raft scenes a humid, suffocating tension. Cohen’s Mahmoud is the standout, his Syrian cadence laced with exhaustion that makes you lean into the headphones. The 7+ hours fly by because you’re too busy white-knuckling the steering wheel (or life raft) with them. This isn’t an audiobook; it’s an immersion.
