Knox Riley’s narration is the standout here, transforming what could’ve been another generic ‘reborn as X’ fantasy into an audiobook that feels tactile and urgent. His voice has a gravelly warmth that suits the isolation of being a lone hatchling, and his pacing during action sequences—like a frantic scurry across branches or a tense standoff with a predator—feels like it’s moving at the speed of your own heartbeat. The production quality is solid, with subtle ambient sounds (rustling leaves, distant growls) that never overpower the narration but do wonders for immersion. That said, the story’s early chapters suffer from a few too many ‘then this happened, then that happened’ moments where the plot feels more like a checklist of survival tasks than a cohesive narrative. Riley’s performance keeps things engaging despite this, but I wished the writing had spent a little more time fleshing out the hatchling’s emotional journey. The lack of a clear ‘hook’ beyond ‘survive’ also means the stakes can feel repetitive after a while. That said, if you’re in the mood for a no-frills, high-stakes fantasy where the hero’s journey starts from absolute zero, this audiobook will hook you faster than a dragon’s claws.
