I’ll admit, I went into *Return to Neverwylde* expecting a lighthearted sci-fi fling, but what I got was far more satisfying—a romance that’s equal parts *The Martian*’s problem-solving and *Pride and Prejudice*’s verbal sparring. The standout here is the dynamic between Dr. Elara Voss, a botanist with a chip on her shoulder, and Security Chief Kael Torren, whose smirk you can *hear* in Wiggin’s narration. Their chemistry crackles, but it’s the way Mooney weaves their personal growth into the planet’s mysteries that elevates this above typical alien romance fare. The slow reveal of Neverwylde’s reactive flora—plants that *judge* the humans studying them—adds a layer of eerie fascination, and Wiggin’s ability to shift from dry humor to genuine awe makes it land. That said, the pacing isn’t perfect. The middle act drags slightly as the team’s research logs take center stage, and while Wiggin’s delivery keeps it engaging, I found myself wishing for more momentum in the central conflict. And while the side characters are vivid, a few feel underutilized—particularly the planet’s indigenous species, which get teasing hints but never fully pay off. Still, the payoff in the final act, with its blend of emotional vulnerability and high-stakes discovery, more than makes up for it. Wiggin’s narration is the glue: her Kael is deliciously smug, her Elara deliciously exasperated, and her handling of the alien ‘voices’ (subtle, eerie, never overdone) is a highlight. If you love romance where the leads earn their happy ending—and where the setting is as compelling as the kiss—this is a gem.
