It’s rare to find a narrator who can make a spell-slinging war feel this intimate. That said, the story isn’t without friction. Peed’s worldbuilding is ambitious to a fault—there’s so much lore crammed into the opening that it occasionally feels like drinking from a firehose. By the midpoint, the political maneuvering can drag, and a few supporting characters blur together despite Kaminsky’s best efforts. The production, though, is flawless: crisp audio, no distracting pops or mouth clicks, and a soundscape that enhances the immersion without overpowering the performance. If you crave fantasy where the magic feels as dangerous as the swords, and where revenge is a dish served with a side of existential dread, this audiobook is a knockout.
