About This Audiobook

In *Rift*, Steven James crafts a horror-tinged YA novel that transforms bedtime ghost stories into something far more sinister. Sahara O’Saughnessy has always loved spinning tales for her friends—stories about shadowy figures, cursed objects, and creatures that lurk in the dark. But when she stumbles upon a literal rift into the realm of lore, her imaginings start bleeding into the real world. The line between fiction and nightmare blurs as her friends vanish one by one, pulled into the same nightmares she helped invent. This isn’t just another portal fantasy; it’s a psychological descent into a horror where the monsters aren’t just real—they’re fueled by her own creativity.

What makes *Rift* stand out is its claustrophobic tension and James’s knack for making the supernatural feel deeply personal. Sahara isn’t a chosen one or a hero by design; she’s a girl whose worst impulses—her pride, her recklessnessset this nightmare in motion. The horror isn’t just in the creatures that hunt her but in the way her own stories twist and betray her. Taylor Meskimen’s narration amplifies this dread with a voice that’s equal parts weary and razor-sharp, shifting seamlessly between Sahara’s sarcastic quips and the guttural growls of the entities stalking her.

AudioBook Atlas

I came to *Rift* expecting another YA horror retread, but James delivers something far more unsettling—a story that feels like a curse itself, creeping into your head long after the audiobook ends. Meskimen’s performance is a masterclass in balancing tone. She nails Sahara’s teenage cynicism, but it’s her vocal work when the rift yawns open that really chills you—her voice dropping into a guttural rasp, then snapping back with a terrified shriek. The pacing is relentless, with chapters ending on cliffhangers that feel like betrayals, especially when Sahara’s friends start disappearing into the same stories she told them. That said, the book isn’t without flaws. The lore feels underdeveloped at times—the rules of the rift are murky, and some of the creature designs lean too heavily on familiar horror tropes. And while Meskimen’s performance is stellar, there were a few instances where her voice work for secondary characters blurred together, making it hard to distinguish them in fast-paced scenes. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping, atmospheric listen. By the time the credits rolled, I was left wondering: *What stories am I telling?* Because after *Rift*, I’m not sure I’ll ever look at a bedtime tale the same way again.
