Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride

Matthew Shaw’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook. He nails Robby’s voice—nasal, affected, and dripping with the kind of drama you’d expect from a man who’s spent his life commanding a stage. But Shaw doesn’t just mimic the character; he *inhabits* him, layering in subtle shifts for Robby’s emotional moments that make the heartfelt scenes land with real punch. The supporting cast is just as strong, particularly the gruff, no-nonsense rancher whose gravelly tones contrast beautifully with Robby’s higher register. The production is crisp, with no distracting background noise, and the pacing is tight enough to keep the story moving—but not so fast that you miss the clever dialogue or the slow-burn romance. That said, the story’s first act drags a bit as Robby’s backstory is unpacked, and some of the supporting characters feel underdeveloped. The mail-order bride premise is clever but relies on a few too-convenient twists to keep the plot rolling. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise delightful listen.
