His delivery is masterful in its restraint; he lets Negrete’s prose do the work, only heightening the tension with a well-placed pause or a sudden sharpness in tone. The book’s structure is ambitious, jumping between military campaigns, political intrigue, and cultural shifts, but it mostly works. The third Punic War isn’t just a chapter—it’s a gut punch, rendered with the kind of detail that makes you flinch when the siege engines start rolling. That said, this isn’t a casual listen. The sheer density of names, factions, and shifting alliances demands focus, and there are moments where the pacing stumbles under the weight of its own scope. A tighter edit in the middle acts (particularly during the numbing recitals of Senate debates) would’ve helped. And while Wasveiler’s narration is excellent, his character voices for non-Roman figures occasionally blur together. But these are quibbles. What lingers is the way Negrete forces you to confront Rome’s duality: the republic that birthed democracy’s ideals was also a machine of slaughter and subjugation. If you want your history with moral complexity and a narrator who treats the material like a gripping novel, this is your audiobook. Just clear your schedule—you’ll need it.
