His arrogance isn’t the tired ‘alpha male’ trope; it’s the desperation of a man who’s spent his life being underestimated, and now he’s lashing out at the one person who sees right through him. Lila, meanwhile, is the kind of heroine who’d rather set a palace on fire than play nice, and Taylor’s narration sells every eyeroll, every cutting remark with delicious disdain. The audiobook’s pacing is where it stumbles slightly. The first act drags with political exposition (yes, we *need* to know about the trade disputes, but did we need *three* scenes of advisors droning on?), and York’s Thorne occasionally veers into *too* much gravel-voiced smolder—like he’s narrating a car commercial, not a royal crisis. But the chemistry between the leads more than makes up for it. Their verbal sparring is *electric*, especially in a mid-book scene where Lila dismantles Thorne’s ego with a single arch of Taylor’s eyebrow (you’ll *hear* it in her voice). The production polish—subtle soundscapes for ballroom scenes, the echo of a throne room—adds immersion without gimmickry.
