Sean Crisden and Mari’s narration duo is the secret sauce here, turning what could’ve been another glossy romance into a full-bodied cinematic experience. Crisden’s Cruz is all velvet menace—his voice drops an octave when he’s lying, smooths out when he’s winning, and crackles with danger when he’s done playing games. Mari’s Zafira crackles with controlled fury, her diction sharp enough to cut glass when she’s dismantling Cruz’s ego. Together, they make the snappy dialogue crackle like live wires. The production is crisp, with no tinny narration or long pauses, though at times Mari’s pacing feels just a hair too brisk—some emotional beats zip by before they fully land. The story itself is a high-wire act of moral ambiguity; Cruz isn’t a hero, and Zafira isn’t innocent, which gives their dynamic a delicious edge. The second-half twist is so abrupt it might leave listeners reeling, but that’s Young’s signature: she doesn’t coddle. If you love romances that feel like a betrayal you’ll binge anyway, this audiobook delivers—just don’t expect a neat happily ever after.
