The pacing is where this audiobook *shines* and occasionally stumbles. The first act is a slow burn, all creeping dread and worldbuilding, but once the Conspiracy’s plan kicks into gear, the tension never lets up. That said, Riley’s love for jargon (seriously, the Emergents’ ability tiers could use a cheat sheet) sometimes bogs down the action. And while the ending lands with a gut-punch, I wished for more clarity on the Hypnagogics’ motives—they’re compelling villains, but their philosophy feels undercooked next to the visceral stakes. Still, the audio production is flawless: the sound design is subtle but immersive, with distant screams and metallic groans that make the Mill feel alive (or maybe *undead*).
