Kensington’s narration of Samantha’s chapters shines with a breathy vulnerability that makes her every whispered confession feel like a secret you’re not supposed to hear. Shedlock, meanwhile, nails Samson’s gruff exterior with an undercurrent of simmering regret—his voice cracks just enough in key moments to remind you he’s not just a tough guy, he’s a man who’s spent years pretending he’s over someone he never actually let go. The production quality is top-tier, with subtle ambient sounds (rain on windows, distant train whistles) that ground the story in a lived-in realism. That said, the pacing wobbles slightly in the middle act; the reverse timeline risks leaving listeners adrift for a few chapters before the emotional payoff kicks in. And while James’ prose is undeniably lush, some metaphors lean a hair too poetic—beautiful, but occasionally distracting. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise masterful audiobook.
