But French’s novel blew me away—it’s a Western that refuses to romanticize its setting, instead using the frontier as a crucible for raw, unfiltered storytelling. The romance isn’t just a subplot; it’s a slow burn that feels earned, built on shared struggle and hard-won trust rather than contrived chemistry. My only critique? A few side characters blur together in the middle act, making it hard to keep track of who’s who when the action heats up. Still, French’s world-building is so immersive that even minor players feel like real people you might’ve met in a dusty saloon. Virtual Voice’s narration is the secret weapon here. Their voice for the protagonist, Sam, is a masterclass in restraint—gruff but not overdone, weary but never whiny. The production is clean, with just enough ambient texture to place you on the trail without overpowering the dialogue. My biggest nitpick? Some of the female characters’ voices skew a tad too modern for the setting, which jolted me out of the immersion a few times. But those are minor quibbles for a performance that otherwise holds the story together like a well-oiled holster.
