I’ll be honest—I went into *School of Magic 3* expecting more of the same high-octane magic battles that defined the first two books. Instead, King delivers a story that’s *quieter* in the best way, and far more haunting. The Autarch isn’t just another big bad; he’s a metaphysical loan shark, and the dread of Jol’s debt hangs over every chapter like a storm cloud. The magic system, already one of the series’ strengths, gets even sharper here—spells aren’t just tools, but *transactions*, and the cost of power is measured in more than mana. That said, the mid-section sags slightly under the weight of Jol’s introspection. A few chapters could’ve been tightened to maintain the relentless momentum of the opening act. The narration, though, is flawless. Robin Shay’s performance as Jol is a standout—he nails the character’s exhaustion without tipping into self-pity, and his delivery during the flashback sequences (where we see the original "favor" unfold) is heartbreaking. Patrick Dubois’ Autarch, meanwhile, is *unsettling* in the best way; his voice is smooth as oil, but there’s a faint, distorted edge to it, like a radio signal bleeding through from somewhere *wrong*. The sound design reinforces this: the Autarch’s scenes are subtly layered with a low, pulsing hum, as if his presence warps the air itself. My only nitpick? The female characters sometimes blend together in Shay’s narration—distinct voices would’ve helped. But that’s a minor quibble in an otherwise stellar production. If you love fantasy that grapples with consequence, not just combat, this is a must-listen.
