Secrets in Dark Waters

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I cued up *Secrets in Dark Waters*. Bayou mysteries can so easily tip into cliché—all gators and voodoo tropes—but Cassidy sidesteps the expected with a story that’s as much about emotional wreckage as it is about murder. Monique isn’t your typical protagonist: she’s prickly, sometimes reckless, and her grief makes her blind to obvious dangers. That flawed humanity is what makes her compelling, and Scott’s narration sells it. She gives Monique a voice that’s equal parts steel and vulnerability, especially in the quieter moments when the weight of her mother’s death crashes over her. Jacque, the reclusive local who gets pulled into her hunt, could’ve been a cardboard love interest, but Scott’s performance—low, rough, and weary—turns him into something far more interesting: a man who’s as damaged by the bayou’s secrets as the land itself. The pacing, though, is where opinions might divide. This isn’t a sprint; it’s a slog through waist-deep water, with Cassidy taking her time to let the dread seep in. Some listeners might chafe at the deliberate unfolding of the plot, especially in the middle act where the mystery plateaus. And while the bayou’s omnipresent threat is palpable, there are moments where the dialogue veers into melodrama (a late-night confrontation in a shack feels *just* a beat too soap-opera). That said, the payoff—when it comes—is brutally satisfying, not because of some wild twist, but because the emotional stakes feel earned. The production is clean, with no distracting edits, though I’d have loved a touch more atmospheric sound design (a distant croak of a frog, the lap of water) to deepen the immersion. Still, for fans of slow-burn mysteries where the setting is a character and the narrator *becomes* the story, this is a standout.
