What I got instead was a psychological slow burn that lingers like a bad dream. The premise is deceptively simple: Lene Moritzen walks into a police station and calmly announces she doesn’t believe her husband is *actually* her husband. No grand conspiracy, no sci-fi body-snatching—just a woman’s gut insistence that something is *wrong*. Henriksen’s genius is in how he weaponizes the banal: a signature that looks slightly off, a story about a childhood memory that doesn’t quite align. It’s the kind of dread that seeps in, not through jump scares, but through the slow realization that the people we love might be strangers. Søren Elung Jensen’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon. His Lene is weary but precise, her recounting so matter-of-fact that it makes the absurd premise feel plausible. But it’s his Eugen that’s truly unsettling—a voice that’s *almost* warm, *almost* familiar, but with a cadence that’s just slightly askew, like a reflection that doesn’t quite mirror you. My one critique? The ending, while thematically satisfying, feels a touch rushed after such meticulous buildup. I wanted one more beat to sit with the implications.
