Senseless

I’ll admit, I went into *Senseless* expecting another by-the-numbers detective vs. serial killer showdown. What I got instead was a far more interesting—and frustrating—beast. Malfi’s strength lies in his ability to make the procedural elements feel fresh by focusing on the *weight* of the investigation. The detective, Voigt (voiced with exhausted precision by Joe Hempel), isn’t a genius or a loose cannon; he’s a man drowning in paperwork and his own complicity, and Hempel’s performance sells every sigh and stalled breath. The real standout, though, is Ray Greenley as the suspect, whose calm, almost *polite* delivery makes his scenes skin-crawlingly effective. Jenn Lee’s chapters, meanwhile, add a layer of tragic inevitability that keeps the story from tipping into misanthropy. That said, the pacing *will* test some listeners. The first third is deliberate to a fault, with Malfi indulging in atmospheric detours that sometimes feel like padding. And while the multi-narrator approach is largely successful, the transitions between perspectives can be jarring—especially when Greenley’s sections (intentionally) undercut the tension with their eerie detachment. The production is otherwise flawless, with subtle audio cues (a flickering fluorescent light, the crunch of gravel) that ground the story in a tactile reality. It’s not a perfect audiobook, but it’s a *memorable* one—less about solving a mystery than about watching good people corrode under the sun. If you love your horror slow, literary, and dripping with existential sweat, this is your summer listen.
