I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes when I saw *another* thriller set in a ‘sleepy mountain town.’ But *Severed Echoes* disarmed me within the first hour—not with a bang, but with the slow, creeping realization that Chernov was playing a longer game. The inciting crime (a hiker’s disappearance) feels almost secondary to the web of lies it exposes among the locals. The pacing is deliberate, but never sluggish; Chernov trusts the listener to sit with the tension, to notice the way a character’s hesitation over a seemingly minor detail (like misremembering a timeline) becomes a landmine later. That trust pays off in the final act, which delivers twists that feel earned, not contrived. Rob Reider’s performance is *almost* flawless. His delivery of the protagonist, Detective Caleb Voss, is pitch-perfect—a man whose exhaustion isn’t just physical but moral, his voice roughened by too many unsolved cases and too much coffee. Where Reider stumbles slightly is in differentiating the female characters; a few secondary voices blur together in tone, requiring me to rewind once or twice to track who was speaking. That’s a minor quibble, though, in an otherwise immersive listen. The production quality is top-notch, with just enough atmospheric sound design (the echo of a gunshot, the hum of a diner’s fluorescent lights) to enhance the mood without distracting. My one critique of the story itself? The villain’s ultimate motivation, while chilling, hinges on a reveal that might feel *slightly* too neat for readers who prefer their evil more banal. But in a genre crowded with serial killers and cartoonish masterminds, *Severed Echoes* stands out by making its horror feel tragically human.
